Mouminatou Thiaw is a Senegalese American painter, sculptor and printmaker from Mboro, Senegal and Ashland, Oregon. She creates ecosystems and atmospheres using impressionist forms and color techniques to mediate on the entanglement of corporeal, spiritual, familial, ecological, and global forces with iconic motifs and fluid expression across stylized mediums. Color is a language of her paintings and an exercise in close looking through which she uses intensity and opacity to stir affection for intersecting identities within oneself and one’s ecosystems. Her various mediums translate the human form in abstract interpretations as well as figurative scenes, all building upon her vision of an Afrofuturist Womanist world, between starshine and clay. Mouminatou’s artistic world honors creation, connection, and flourishing, made of artworks that are prayerful seeds for the future along paths of healing, spreading wings of faith in times of learning, and offering warm embraces in the liminal spaces.

She currently lives and works out of Nashville, Tennessee.
